TECHNICAL ROCK CLIMBING
Minimum Required Gear:
- When you enter the Park at Togue Pond Gate, they will be notifying the Chimney Pond Ranger of your plans to climb and will need to know your intended route and your approximate arrival time at Chimney Pond.
- Approaches to all climbs are bushwhacks from Chimney Pond and may take 1/2 hour to 5 hours to reach the base of the climbs.
- Chimney Pond ranger(s) will inspect your climbing gear upon your arrival in the campground. There are no equipment rentals available anywhere in the Park.
- For Armadillo/Flat Iron routes you must leave Chimney Pond by 8:00 AM.
- Helmets are required and must be climbing helmets, not designed for other disciplines.
- One rope (50 meter long minimum) is required /2 climbers (3 climbers = 2 ropes).
- You are required to have at a minimum one (1) set of stoppers or nuts; tri-cams and hexcentrics are useful. One (1) set cams up to 4+ inches for some routes. *Armadillo Route requires a cam 4" plus in size.
- Ranger will require the following equipment in addition to technical gear: Rain gear, 2 liters of H2O, head lamp, First Aid kit, map and compass.

Technical rock climbing is a sport with inherent risk; climbers must accept that risk and responsibility as their own when they undertake climbs in Baxter State Park. Ranger checks of gear serve soley to inventory and confirm climbers have minimum required equipment. The Park accepts no responsibility regarding the safe operating condition of the equipment checked.
